description
American Extracting Forceps No.17 is a specialized dental surgical instrument designed primarily for the extraction of mandibular (lower) first and second molars.
Target: Lower molars with intact or partially broken-down crowns.
Design: Used to firmly grasp the tooth at its cervical neck and trifurcation, allowing for controlled luxation and removal from the alveolar bone.
Beak Configuration: Features a distinct, pointed beak on both the buccal and lingual sides. These points are designed to fit perfectly into the bifurcations of lower molar roots.
American Pattern: Unlike English-style forceps, the American Pattern features a straight, horizontal hinge with no visible pin. The handle is typically checkered or textured to provide a non-slip, ergonomic grip.
Vs. Forceps No. 15: Forceps No. 15 and No. 17 serve the same purpose, but No. 17 features straight handles, whereas No. 15 has curved handles.
Vs. Forceps No. 23: While also used for lower molars, the No. 23 (Cowhorn) forcep has large, spiked beaks meant for squeezing into the furcation and forcing teeth apart. The No. 17 relies more on gripping the crown and intact roots rather than splitting them.
